The Call Goes Out
Now that the announcement has been made, I thought I’d put some thoughts down. Some of the backers from the last Kickstarter already know, but for many of you, this is new.
I’ve been hinting at this for the better part of a year. A mention here, a vague reply there, a half-sentence in an interview. Subtle. Maybe too subtle. I’m done being subtle.
I know the question forming in your head. You’re thinking: Richard, what the hell? Fair. Let me explain.
For years, people have asked me why Colonial Gothic doesn’t use the 20-sided die. They’ve been polite about it. Some less so. Occasionally, someone has said it directly: the game needs to embrace something familiar. Something everyone already has in their dice bag. The 20-sided die.
I resisted for a long time. 12° is mine. I built it. I stand behind it. I’m not walking away from it.
But I’ve been listening, and what I heard, eventually, was this: some people love this setting, love this history, love these shadows, and the die is the only thing stopping them. That’s the only barrier. One die.
One freaking die.
The Revolution Edition removes that barrier. It is a conversion of the game to the 20-sided die. The 20° system. Same Colonial America. Same supernatural horror. Same war no one else can see, same secrets buried under the politics and the battles. Everything Fourth Edition players know is compatible. Everything coming down the road is compatible. Nothing disappears.
I’ll answer the question directly: Is 12° dead?
No. It is here. It will be here. I will still be here. The Revolution Edition is just another part of the family.
There is another reason I am doing this. This is something I started with a dear friend who died before we could finish it. He believed in this project. He believed the game deserved a wider door. I’m finishing it. That matters to me more than I can adequately put into words. It has been hard working on this version, and it is because of missing my friend. Even more so, the pressure to take his ideas and do them justice.
I’ll be talking about this a lot between now and July 4. You already know I can’t help it. If you followed the Fourth Edition campaign, you know I overshare. I can’t stop that. I’ve tried.
